About

What Lies Beneath The Surface : An ongoing long-term project dating from 2006.
The series examines both landscape & architecture and is constantly evolving.

The photographs showcased here are inspired by European history and its time line over centuries, from the Gothic architecture of the 13th century to contemporary architecture such as the Mercedes-Benz museum in Stuttgart. There is an obvious analogy of “Statement Architecture” and it’s relationship to worship, be it religion or the motorcar.
The European landscape displays the evidence of time passing over thousands of years, glacial activity, the movement of continental plates and erosion being highly visible.
Cultural figures from all across Europe and beyond have shaped the world, as we know it. My personal understanding & learning has been particularly influenced by many prominent historical figures such as; Napoleon, Mozart, Bach, Goya, Turner, Velasquez, Goethe, Nelson and the period of fairly recent history they inhabited. The beginnings of world trade led by the Dutch in the 17th century opened a new chapter of history in this particular era, dominance of the sea’s and the conflict it brought.

Key elements inspire this work, driven by curiosity and memory.
